What is Block Storage?
Block Storage is an expandable, high-performance storage solution that allows you to attach additional volumes to your virtual machine (VM). It behaves like an external drive and operates independently from your instance's root disk, making it ideal for:
- Storing databases or large files
- Keeping backups
- Scaling storage without affecting VM performance
Block Storage can be added, resized, or detached at any time—offering maximum flexibility for evolving workloads.
Adding Block Storage to Your VM
To attach Block Storage using the Webberstop Cloud Portal, follow these steps:
-
Navigate to the Block Storage section in the portal sidebar.
-
Click the ➕ plus icon in the top-right corner to open the creation menu.
-
Fill in the required details:
- Project: Choose the project to associate the volume with.
- Datacenter Location: Select the zone where the volume will be created.
- Instance: Choose the VM to which the volume should be attached.
- Volume Size: Select a predefined storage plan or set a custom size.
- Name: Give the Block Storage volume a meaningful name.
- Billing Cycle: Choose between Hourly, Monthly, or Yearly billing.
-
Click Review & Create to provision the new volume.
Once created, the volume will be automatically attached to the selected instance and ready for use.
Managing Your Block Storage
After creation, you can manage Block Storage volumes from the Block Storage section:
- View Volume Details
- Resize the volume (increase capacity)
- Detach from the current VM
- Take Snapshots for backup or cloning
- Delete the volume when no longer needed
These controls give you the flexibility to manage your storage lifecycle independently of your instance’s compute resources.
Snapshots are a great way to back up critical data or create templates for repeatable environments. Always snapshot before resizing or detaching!
