Releasing a Public IP Address
A Public IP Address can be released when it is no longer required—freeing it up for future use and helping optimize cost and resource management. This is typically done when an instance is decommissioned or replaced, or when public access is no longer necessary.
When to Release a Public IP
Consider releasing a Public IP when:
- The instance is no longer in use.
- You are switching to a private-only network setup.
- You want to reassign the IP to a different instance.
- You're optimizing usage to avoid idle or unbilled resources.
Steps to Release a Public IP
To release a Public IP from an instance using the Webberstop Cloud Portal, follow these steps:
-
Log in to the Cloud Portal.
-
From the left-hand menu, navigate to Networks > Public IP Address.
-
Locate the Public IP you wish to release from the list.
-
Click the 🗑️ trash icon next to the IP entry.
-
In the confirmation dialog:
- Provide a Reason for Release
- Optionally add a Description
- Confirm the Type of Release (Immediate or Scheduled)
-
Click Confirm to proceed.
Once released, the Public IP will be disassociated from the instance and returned to the available IP pool.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Releasing a Public IP is irreversible. Once released, there is no guarantee you will receive the same IP again.
- Ensure that any DNS records or dependent firewall rules are updated accordingly.
- If releasing a Public IP attached to a running instance, public access will be immediately revoked.
Refer to Assigning a Public IP for step-by-step instructions.
